Description

In the last few decades Argentina has faced a particular macroeconomic regime that has differentiated it from its neighbours. In particular, while most Latin American countries, at least before the war in Ukraine, faced relatively low inflation levels, Argentina presented a large inflationary spirals reaching levels above 100%. Moreover, unlike other Latin-American countries, Argentina has been unable to accumulate foreign reserves in the last decades. Consequently, several administrations applied different economic policies to avoid large depreciations, which has detrimental effects on economic growth. As matter of fact, the nominal exchange rate level, both the official and the various parallel rates, have been at the core of the economic debate in the last years. As a consequence of these issues and many others, Argentina presents a lower GDP per capita than one decade ago and poverty levels have reached 40% of the population.
But what could be done in this negative scenario? In this regard, many possible alternative policies have been claimed as must do: increasing the interest rate, decreasing monetary emission and public expenditure, fully dollarizing the economy, applying tighter controls over the exchange rate market, etc. The only thing clear is that there is a consensus that something has to be changed. However, which of these economic policies are feasible? Which of them is best?
In this discussion, both complex and urgent, it is essential to create spaces to listen and discuss these alternatives where economic students can get involved and give their thoughts. Thus, these questions and many others will motivate the workshop organized by the YSI Economic Development group and the Macroeconomy and Economic Development research project of the National University of Mar del Plata. In particular, several senior scholars are going to present their views in this regard as well as present some insights of their research that are related to this issue, followed by an interactive debate between the participants. Moreover, before this discussion, some young scholars are invited to present their research and to receive comments from senior scholars.
