Description
Following the rise of crypto-assets, developments in IT and most recently in the wake of covid-19, discussions surrounding the potential introduction of central bank digital currencies (CBDC) have intensified. In general terms, this webinar and the corresponding paper reconcile 3 key questions:
- Should CBDC be issued?
- How will CBDC be delivered to end-users (i.e. the general public?)
- Should CBDC be account or token-based?
Georg will also showcase a solution, how cross-border payments can made to be instant (unlike domestic payments, cross-border payments are not instant).
George Pantelopoulos, the presenting scholar attained his PhD in economics at the University of Newcastle, Australia and is completing currently a book on payments and FMIs with Ulrich Bindseil, European Central Bank (ECB). Georg was also a presenter at the LPFMI Spring 2022 workshop in both Frankfurt and London (online).
Maria Cecilia (Ceci) del Barrio will be discussant. Ceci is our former working group Finance, Law and Economics coordinator, an associate researcher at the European Banking Institute and banking supervisor at the ECB. She received her PhD in international law from Trento University.
This webinar makes-up for the scheduled discussion originally on Wed. 21. Jun. 2023 during the LPFMI 2023 workshop in Frankfurt, which could not take place for various reasons. We are looking forward to the conversation. LPFMI
