Location:

University of the Free State, Bloemfontein, Free State

Workshop

Description

The YSI Africa working group once again will partner the African Economic History Network at their 2020 conference at the University
of the Free State. The AEHN has held annual meetings since 2005, and participation has grown exponentially. The 2020 meeting will
be in Bloemfontein, South Africa. One of the main goals of our proposed YSI workshop is to bring Africa-based young scholars into
direct conversation with mentors from various parts of the world and give the mentees a chance to share their research and discuss new
paths for the study of African economic history.

The Workshop itself also feeds into the main conference’s theme which hinged on exploring the interplay between local, regional, and
international dynamics which is often from accounts of African Economic History. While the workshop attempts to deal with this issue it
welcomes abstracts from Young scholars dealing with other critical areas of African economic history while this conference aims
particularly to address this issue, it also welcomes papers on any aspect of African economic history.
We envision a selective and rigorous workshop, where participants will circulate their papers at least five weeks in advance of the
workshop. Participants will read each of the papers closely, and presentations can be kept to brief summaries (ten minutes each), before
we delve into in-depth discussions of each paper, focusing on the analysis and argument as well as issues such as how to think
strategically about each paper with the aim of getting them published in well-regarded journals.
