DESCRIPTION

The Covid-19 pandemic made the huge divide between capitalism’s winners and losers all the more apparent. Winners reflect the growing concentration and centralization of capital that is making certain corporations more powerful. We see their effects in digital polarization, transnational innovation dynamics, the rise of multiple forms of rents, regional asymmetries and spread power relations among actors. These actors have been studied since XX’s century in the context of the emergence of a new stage of capitalism, but rapid technological changes raise old and new questions about them. On the one hand, the debate about technological governance concentration in a few private actors. Big digital firms are challenging states’ power and urging for new regulations in core countries. On the other hand, situating the discussion in the divide between core and peripheral countries, these processes continue bringing questions about the role and effect of multinational companies in economic development.
With the conviction that we need to build more comprehensive analysis of capital accumulation trends, in the current webinar series young scholars will have the opportunity to discuss with the authors of four books aimed at addressing these challenges and propose alternatives.
