Description

The London Political Economy Network (LPEN) was established in 2020. Its main purpose is to bring together the various research centers in the London area related to political economy. One of the main initiatives of LPEN is to organize an annual workshop for PhD students from the London area working on political economy topics. The workshop provides second and third year PhD students with an opportunity to receive feedback from experienced researchers and other PhD students. Especially since the pandemic, events like this have played a crucial role in allowing PhD students to showcase their research, network with fellow PhDs and established faculty, and generally overcome the isolation that has been experienced over the past two years.

On Friday 10th June 2022, LPEN will hold its second annual PhD workshop together with the City Political Economy Research Centre (CITYPERC). As part of the proceedings, LPEN plans to host a special session on how to navigate academic life after the PhD organized by YSI/INET. As part of this session, Cecilia Rikap will provide an introduction to the work of YSI/INET in general and its approach to early career scholars in particular aiming to engage them with YSI and think of their own initiatives, also inviting them to get involved with the YSI UK hub. Alongside Cecilia, we aim to have early career researchers who can speak to their experiences in securing permanent academic jobs and publishing work from their PhDs. In the context of the pandemic, the situation for young scholars has become increasingly challenging, especially for those who go against the grain and engage in new economic thinking. This session will therefore be a vital resource for young scholars and support from YSI help make possible a post-workshop social event that will allow for further networking opportunities.

This will be the final session of the day and we are planning snacks during the session and then drinks and pizza at the local pub in front of City to follow up on the discussions started during the day, especially during this final session. This final session is open to all the people expressing their interest by emailing the organizer of the project.
