States & Markets call, North America Convening, deadline extended

Dear all,

The YSI States and Markets Working Group invites submissions from young scholars to the YSI North America Convening to be held in Los Angeles, 22nd -24th February 2019.

The deadline for submissions has been extended to January 7th, 2019.

Travel and accommodation will be covered for accepted young scholars from North America (USA, Canada, and Mexico). Confirmed keynote speakers include George Akerlof and Michael Sandel.

The States and Markets Working Group welcomes papers on two broad topics:

The concept of state in the history of economic thought. Theoretical debates.

  • Political economy in the Enlightenment science of jurisprudence (focused on the discussion about the unity of the work of Adam Smith and the economics of David Hume and other authors of the Enlightenment).
  • Marx´s critique of political economy: Insights about modern state, civil society, and socialism.
  • Political economy and national economy throughout the 19th century (centered on the German Historical School of Economics and the historical and philosophical roots of German Historicism).

Theoretical debates about the relationship between capitalism and states throughout the 20th and 21st centuries.

  • In particular perspectives from non-western and non-mainstream schools of thought such as but not limited to Latin American theories, African perspectives, Islamic Economics and Economic analysis inspired by the work of non-economists that have challenged the prevailing notions of states such as Gramsci, the German state derivation school, Poulantzas and others.
