Visiting Assistant Professor (Central European University in Vienna)

Description

From its origins, feminist economists have been brought together by their irreconcilable critiques of neoclassical economics and androcentrism in economics in general. However, while feminist thinkers have offered new concepts, perspectives and approaches, their contributions have been undeniably shaped and constrained by mainstream economics and its disciplinary limits. As a consequence, unable to alter power relations, the proposed policies have often failed to improve the living conditions of women, particularly non-western women and people with diverse sexual orientations and gender identities.

In this webinar, Dr Gisela Carrasco-Miró argues in favour of decolonizing feminist economics, discussing how drawing from the experiences of non-Western and non-capitalist economies is a necessary step to transform knowledge production and foster real change.

Gisela Carrasco-Miró is Visiting Assistant Professor at the Gender Studies Department at the Central European University in Vienna where she teaches Decolonising Development and Feminist Economics. Gisela holds a PhD in Postcolonial and Gender Studies from Utrecht University and MSc in Development Economics from the School of Oriental and African Studies (University of London). Over eight years she has worked as Gender Advisor and Local Economic Development Programme Specialist for the United Nations in Central America and Sub-Saharan Africa as well as independent researcher for several international organizations and social movements. She has published on decolonising knowledges on politics of development, economics, ecology and feminism in a range of peer-reviewed journals.
