Description

The economy is a complex evolving system, thus its analysis requires tools that can take into account all dimensions relevant for such a complex world. As young researchers, we often question ourselves how to take into account heterogeneity, interactions, non-linearities, path-dependency, tipping points to name a few.

In this project, we will learn and discuss together a powerful and growing tool that can address the complexity of the economy: agent-based models. We will investigate what are the frontiers in macro ABM and discuss how this tool can be helpful for answering the key economic questions of our times.

The project is a partnership with the Seasonal School "Agent based models in Economics: theory, toolkit and policy laboratories" offered by the Institute of Economics at the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna. In addition to engaging in the discussions organized by the YSI side event, selected participants will also attend lectures presenting ABM techniques, develop and design a model through software laboratories and learn how to analyze statistically the data produced by ABMs. The school provides students with both the technical and methodological skills required to successfully develop and analyze simulation models in a research project, allowing them to use these tools in their research as part of their PhD, or a research paper.

More information about the school can be found here. The school is aimed for Master and Ph.D. students enrolled in Economics curricula, while applicants from other disciplines are also welcomed.

Selected participants will be offered partial travel stipends by the YSI. There is a fee for attending the school, which fully covers accommodation and food during the Seasonal School. Unfortunately, the fee cannot be covered by YSI. As part of this partnership with YSI, the Institute of Economics at the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna will waive the fees for a selected number of YSI participants based in the Global South.

Please note that in order to be considered for the YSI travel stipend it is required to apply BOTH to the Seasonal School and to the YSI selection. These are separate processes and the selection for the Seasonal School by the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna works on a “first come, first served” basis, while the YSI selection process will take place after the deadline on April 30th.
