Professor Djiwandono will discuss about issues of Indonesian private debts and the policy responses during the Asian Financial Crisis that heavily affected Indonesian economy during 1997/98, including the central bank liquidity supports, bank recapitalisation, Frankfurt Agreement, and also the request of SBA from IMF, that making the role of IMF is important during this crisis.
Professor J. Soedradjad Djiwandono was the Governor of Bank Indonesia, the nation's central bank from 1993 to 1998.
Prior to accepting the position as Governor of Bank Indonesia in 1993, he had expressed his concerns on the high number of bad debts in the banking sector.
He received his bachelor's degree in economics from Gadjah Mada University in 1963 and a Ph.D. from Boston University in 1980.
He held a wide range of economic positions, both outside of and within government including:
• Researcher, Institute of Economics and Social Research, Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI)
• Professor of Faculty of Economics, University of Indonesia
• Bureau Head, National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas)
• Special Assistant to the Minister of Trade, later, Junior Minister for Trade.
• Assistant Minister, Coordinating Ministry of Economics, Trade and Industry
Currently, he is teaching at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, a Graduate School of Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, while continuing to contribute to public policy debate, especially in Indonesia, by writing articles including op-ed pieces about current economic issues, particularly about matters involving monetary policy.
