Dear Friends,
This Thursday (30/03) at 4p.m. (CET) we will have the third webinar of our series "INNOVATION IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES". The presentation will be made by Prof. Dr. Adam Szirmai (UNU-MERIT) and it is called "Escaping middle income traps. The role of structural modernisation and technological upgrading."

Prof. Szirmai's presentation examines the reasons why countries can be caught in so-called middle income traps, focusing on two key dimensions of structural modernisation: the employment share of the 'modern' sector and the size of the technology gap relative to the world frontier.
It is a great pleasure to have prof. Szirmai in our webinar series and I encourage everyone interested in development economics to be in this presentation. I apologize for the technical problems with the sound that we had in our last webinar.
The webinar series is organized by YSI Latin America and YSI Innovation WG.
Abstract:
In economic history, several emerging economies have succeeded in attaining middle income status. Only very few countries have continued their catch up process to achieve high income status. This presentation examines the reasons why countries can be caught in so-called middle income traps. It focuses on two key dimensions of structural modernisation, namely the employment share of the 'modern' sector and the size of the technology gap relative to the world frontier.
