Young Scholars' Initiative Economic Development WG in collaboration with Philosophy of Economics WG and the 'Dimensions of Poverty' Conference Berlin 2017 is happy to announce a pre-conference webinar featuring Professor Jonathan Wolff, University of Oxford and Conor McGlynn, MPhil in Philosophy, University of Cambridge.
The two speakers, both from Political Philosophy background, will discuss how the Concept of Justice was formed and changed and its implication in understanding and analysing poverty issues.
Many philosophers and normative theorists aim to reconcile their academic and political responsibilities. As a result, some political philosophers have become advocates for political change and ultimately political activists themselves. Is there any deeper or even necessary correlation between normative analysis and political engagement? In this section, participants are invited to raise questions of both principles and application regarding academic activism. The goal is not only to shed light on existing initiatives to fight poverty, but also to address more fundamental questions on academic activism and on the public role of normative theorists in general.
About the Speakers:
Professor Jonathan Wolff is the Blavatnik Chair in Public Policy in association with Wolfson College. He is a political philosopher who works on questions of equality, disadvantage and social justice. His work in recent years has also turned to applied topics such as public safety, disability, gambling, and the regulation of recreational drugs, which he has discussed in his books Ethics and Public Policy: A Philosophical Inquiry (Routledge 2011) and The Human Right to Health (Norton 2012). Earlier works include Disadvantage (OUP 2007), with Avner de-Shalit; An Introduction to Political Philosophy (OUP, 1996, third edition 2016); Why Read Marx Today? (OUP 2002); and Robert Nozick (Polity 1991).

Conor McGlynn obtained MPhil from University of Cambridge and BA from Trinity College Dublin. He was listed as one of the top undergrads in Philosophy in the UK in 2016.
