Asia and Africa: Economic Partnership or Another Round of plunder?
Asia and Africa are becoming increasingly intertwined. Capital and trade flows between the regions, led by China, have become much larger in the last decade than in previous eras. What are the causes, motivations and consequences of this increased integration? Apart from trade and cultural relations, there has also been discussion about the Asian economic miracle and its potential to offer models for African countries which, in spite of being endowed in rich natural resources, remain poor. What is it that Africa can borrow from the Asian experiences? What would be the most ideal path of economic development and can we learn anything from Asia?
The YSI Africa working group seeks to engage scholarship on the above aspects and take advantage of the Asia convening to engage on these topical issues. Proposed research areas include but are not limited to the following:
Modelling the Asian economic miracles
China and Africa: Mutual relationship or exploitation
African trade with Asia: Impact of livelihoods and the economies
African and Asian economies: Comparative analysis
