YSI Virtual Plenary 2020

Hi all,
We are very happy to share with you the complete list of sessions organized by the Economic Development Working Group (EDWG) as a part of the YSI Virtual Plenary 2020. We are looking forward to seeing you! You can find the full plenary program + times displayed in your local time-zone here.

On Saturday, November 7th, we will have Introduction and Icebreaker moderated by Surbhi Kesar and Elvis Avenyo, followed by a discussion on our State of the Field Report moderated by Santiago Gahn. We will use these sessions as an ice-breaker and discuss the future course for our WG and a broad overview of the most pertinent issues of our field.

On Sunday, November 8th, Surbhi will moderate a Young Scholars presentation session on the theme of ‘Political Economy of Development’, where our young scholars, Yaku Fernandez, Kumithini Sivathas, Rutuja Uttarwar and Florencia Jaccoud, will present their research. This session will be mentored by Professor Snehashish Bhattacharya. This will be followed by an input session on ‘The Economic Impact of Inequality’, where Patricia Couto will host our special-guest Jonathan Ostry – Acting Director of the Asia and Pacific Department, International Monetary Fund.

We will continue on November 10th, Tuesday, with a roundtable on ‘Rethinking Economic Development from Critical Perspective’, with Professor Ingrid H. Kvangraven and Professor Snehashish Bhattacharya (our mentors) as the panelists. The session will be moderated by Surbhi. This will be followed by a Questions Fair with Alicia Bárcena (ECLAC), which will be moderated by Nurlan Jahangirli and Ana Bottega.

On Thursday, November 12th, Surbhi will lead a Questions Fair with Jayati Ghosh. Following this will be a roundtable on ‘The New Failed States? Liberal economies and the reaction to Covid-19‘, with Professor Matías Vernengo, Professor Fiona Tregenna, Professor Antonio Andreoni and Professor Nelson Barbosa as panelists. The session is co-organised with Latin America Working Group and will be moderated by Gabriel Aidar.

On November 13th, Friday, Nurlan Jahangirli and Christina Mosalagae will moderate Questions Fair with Stephanie Blankenburg, Head, Debt and Development Finance Branch, Division on Globalization and Development Strategies, United Nations Conference on Trade and Development.

On November 14th, Saturday, Tamás Gerőcs and Judit Ricz will moderate the session ‘The post-crisis developmental State’ with Professor Judit Ricz, Professor György Csáki, Professor Zsuzsánna Biedermann and Professor Ágnes Orosz as panelists. This session will be followed by a Young Scholars Presentation Session on ‘Trade, Unequal Exchange and Economic Development’, in which our young scholars Sugandha Huria, Ariel Ibañez, Darío Vázquez, Kevin Klyman and Mohamed Anees will present their papers. The session will be mentored by Professor Ingrid Kvangraven and moderated by Santiago.

On Sunday, November 15th, we will a Young Scholars Presentation Session on ‘Industrial development’, where our young scholars, Cecilia Seri, Xinwen Zhang, Zahra Abdolmohammadi and Shahin Behdarvand, will present their papers. The session will be mentored by Professor Antonio Andreoni and moderated by Nurlan.
