Description

This workshop is for anyone who wants to know more about the work of economists outside of academia, in particular working in the public sector. This workshop addresses the questions:

• What do you do as a government economist?
• What tools do you use?
• Is there a place for alternative economics?

It is open to questions and discussion with participants.

About the speaker:

Daniel received an M.A. in economics from the University of Munich and a PhD from Johns Hopkins University. He has been a government economist for over two decades, working at the World Bank, the German Central Bank and the Scottish Government. He has worked on poverty, macroeconomic analysis, environment, water regulation and health. Amongst other things, he was involved in briefing the central bank directorate on international macroeconomic developments, the negotiations over the Scottish GP contract, setting fees for care homes, fiscal analysis of Scottish devolution, setting the strategy for Scottish environment policy, or ‘refreshing' the framework for economic development in Scotland.

Moderated by Goncalo Fonseca

Gonçalo L. Fonseca is a research fellow at the Institute for New Economic Thinking. He received his Ph.D. in Economics from the New School for Social Research and his M.A. from the Johns Hopkins University. His research is on the intersection of the history of economic thought and economic theory. He is currently researching the foundations of the Marginalist Revolution, examining the origins, scope and construction of theories of exchange and competition.
